Project Overview

In this project, we worked together with our clients in order to provide lighting for their large rural outdoor space, divided in to various areas, and focusing in particular on the courtyard garden. Every detail from planning to installation was thoughtfully executed, in order to enhance both the ambient and practical lighting for the property.

The Vision

The peaceful courtyard at this countryside home is a versatile space that extends the indoor living area in summer, creating a space for relaxation, enjoying outdoor dinners or hosting guests in the evenings. It also acts as the entrance to the home, showcasing its heritage features. Beyond this, several other areas and features were of importance; the approach to the property, the soft landscaping and the standing stones.

The brief was threefold:-

• to light the courtyard for entertaining

• to highlight the planting and standing stones so that they could be enjoyed from the house

• to provide practical wayfinding lighting for the driveway and garage.

The Details

A series of elegant pillar lights were strategically positioned in order to showcase the rustic stonework. Complementing these are subtle wall downlights that gently illuminate the greenery and intricate steps, while the large magnolia tree is softly accentuated from below. To add a touch of drama, spotlights grace a select few trees and the standing stones, creating a captivating spectacle visible from within the house after nightfall. This design choice not only prevents the windows from transforming into dark mirrors but also draws the gaze outward. Pathways and borders are thoughtfully illuminated by discreet spike spotlights, carefully adjusted to minimize upward light and glare, with added glare guards ensuring a focused beam for a soothing ambiance. Throughout the space, a warm white light suffuses the surroundings, casting a gentle, inviting glow that strikes the perfect balance between ambiance and functionality.

The Result

Our clients were very impressed by the results, and now enjoy spending more time in their outdoor spaces at night – particularly the courtyard garden. They appreciate not only the enchanced aesthetic appeal but also the practical illumination, aiding seamless transitions in and out of the property.
